2010-01-21
The PeeWee Majors traveled to Detroit Michigan to compete in the Motown Cup Tournament on January 15th - 17thThe Knights started off the weekend on Friday night when they took on the Summit Plastics team out of Fraser Michigan. The Knights took a 1 – 0 lead early in the game and added 3 more goals while keeping the Summit Plastics scoreless, eventually winning the contest 4 – 0. The Knights' next opponent was a team from Lansing, Michigan, the Capital Centre Pride. This game proved to be a back and forth battle, with the lead changing numerous times throughout the match. The Knights finally took the lead late in the third period, and held on to win the game 6 – 5. The boys played their third game of the tournament on Saturday evening against the Livingston Lightening from Howell, Michigan. This proved to be another nail biter of a game, with the teams again changing leads a number of times. As in the previous game, the Knights took the lead towards the end of the third period, and were again able to hold off the opposing team to win 5 – 4. These three victories placed the undefeated Knights as the first seed going into the finals, for a rematch against the Livingston Lightening, who placed second. The final was scheduled early Sunday afternoon, and proved to be the most exciting game of the tournament. The Lightening took a 1 – 0 lead early in the game, but the Knights came back to tie the score. The Knights then scored a second goal, taking the lead, but the determined Lightening were able to score another goal and tie the score. The game ended in a 2 – 2 tie, forcing a five minute overtime period. Both goalies continued their great play, no one was able to score, and the teams went into a shootout. At this point, everyone in the stands was on their feet! Five boys from each team got the opportunity to score for their team in the first round of the shootout. The Knights won the toss and chose to shoot first, but were unable to score. The Lightening made good on their first attempt, scoring a goal. The next pair of shooters failed to score, which brought up the third pair. The Knights scored their first goal of the shootout, and the Lightening were unable to get the puck past the Knights goalie, so the teams remained tied at 3 - 3. The fourth and fifth sets of shooters were also shut out, so a second shootout round of five players from each team was selected - the tension in the arena was palpable! Finally, the fourth Knights shooter was able to get one past the Lightening goalie and score a huge goal! The Lightening player was unable to score, so the last set of shooters was up. The Knights were unable to score another goal, so the game was on the line. If the Lightening player scored a goal, the game would go into the third round of the shootout – if the Knights goalie could come up with the big save, the game was over. The Lightening player came down the ice, made his move, and the Knights goalie was able to come up with a huge save, giving the Knights the 4 – 3 win in a most dramatic fashion!!! Clapping and cheering erupted from the Knights crowd – it was an awesome game and both teams deserved the applause! Each of the Knights players received a medal for winning the tournament, and the team received a very large first place trophy, which was hoisted by all the players on the ice. Additionally, the Most Valuable Player of the tournament award went to the Knights goalie, who played a tremendous game under great pressure! Congratulations to all the Knights players and coaches on a great team effort and an incredibly exciting and successful weekend of hockey!
The team will host the A-Game Polar Bears for three league games on January 23rd and 24th.
Good luck and Go Knights!!!
